Lumicycles take MR11 type bulbs. The MR16 are wider and won't fit into the lamp housing.

I've bought replacements from RS and maplin and usually go for the cheapest I can find. However, I
read somewhere recently that the quality (brightness, light colour, eveness of illumination)
varies significantly between different manufacturers. Can anyone back this up and suggest which
brands are better?

But if you made a suitable housing, they'd work fine, I think.

I leave my lumi lamps on the bike year-round, and since it's a commuter without the benefit of a
bike shed, that means sits out in the rain whenever it rains between the hours of 08:00 and 18:00.
If you do this to them, one thing to bear in mind is that the halogen capsule is held in place
within the reflector assembly of the MR11 bulb by a sort of grey plaster/cement type stuff which
doesn't like the damp. A year of all-weathers exposure sees the grey stuff disintegrate and the beam
pattern goes completely to pot because the halogen capsule flops about relative to the reflector.

For this reason, I think it worth replacing the bulbs at teh start of winter anyway.
