Just attended my first VeloSwap today, at SF Cow Palace. Geez.
At the very least I scored most of the stuff I went looking for, booties, vest, jacket, and a couple
more jerseys (one can never have too many.)
On the lookout for a bike for a friend (a part-time soccer player who has played some pro) whom is
looking to get into cycling, as cycling is one of the few things I can do with a torn ACL. Many
bikes were well beyond his range, max. $500. One seller appeared most interested in taking his
entire stock back with him, with prices rather high (considering most of the bikes were varying
degrees of incomplete.) I wasn't terribly keen on dropping a lot of cash, and figured I'd do a
little due-dilligence before tossing in the towel.
Lo, before my eyes appeared a Bianchi Campione d'Italia, near mint condition, couldn't have more
than 100 miles on it, fully decked out in Campy Mirage (8 spd), Campy hubs with Mexico 68 rims. His
size and a measely $350. The front wheel bearings felt a little tight, the rear wheel needs a a
little truing, and there's a small tear in the saddle. No problem. Sold. Found a fibre drum of
inexpensive Selle Italia saddles $5 ea., so all he's got left is to determine which kind of pedals
and shoes he wants.
Graham Watson and Bob Roll put in appearances and I get pics and sigs. Bob particularly impressed I
have the original Bobke book and signs 'Nice Book _Old School_', he's so damn cool, it's amazing.
Of course, I spend a bit more than I intended, but I was a bit drunk with savings on those things
shops and people were keen to clear out. A couple things weren't to be found or in my range, so
I'll get them around home. All in all it was great and I'll definitely have the next Veloswap on my
to-do list.
