ok so I have been interested in a road bike for some time now. As a beginner I dont plan on spending a whole lot of money on my first bike (compared to most bianchi's I am spending nothing lol). I would like to keep my price under $500. So in my search for a new bike I have had my eye on a few. First, is the SE draft priced $259 at my local shop, The second is the dawes sst from bikesdirect.com, and coming in last is a Aristotle v1.5 from republic bikes ( Republic Bike | Track bikes, fixed gear bicycles, fixies built by us and you ). I would like to someday convert to a flip-flop hub (aristotle already comes with one). That being said I would greatly appreciate some advice from more experienced riders as I dont really know what to look for. any and all help is greatly appreciated, happy peddling =]

You must always remember that the saying "you get what you pay for" is 150% true for bikes.
If you're left with a decision between online and local, go local...you'll be supporting a local business and you have a place to go that is familiar with your bike for tune-ups/repairs/upgrades.

If you've never built a bike before, you may as well get one from a shop. It will come set up (at least it'd better), and most stores will throw in a warranty and free tune-ups and what have you.
I almost bought the SE Draft when I was fixed shopping this last winter. It does have the flip-flop (as does just about every low-end single speed). I do have to tell you, I don't know anybody who flops after they've flipped over to fixed. But, I'm not going to snub anybody who rides a bike.
That said, I'd really strongly recommend you save up a bit longer and get the SE Lager. I've ridden this bike, and it's very nice. I know it's a bit more than the draft, but that bit will get you a CroMag frame (as opposed to the hi-tensile steel of the draft), a three-piece crank (easier to work on and upgrade) and it's about six pounds lighter. I know the pain of price crawling-- where that three hundred dollar bike seems to turn into a Raleigh after an hour, but this is one case where the extra bit is worth it. It's also worth looking at this article.
That said, I still really don't like the Republic Bike, it just screams "prop" to me. But, that's personal.
