First puncture in Conti UGS.

Funny thing about Conti UGS. It was a UGS that punctured 6 times on LEL
last weekend. The other two flats were a patch failure and a valve
failure after I swapped the tyre. Immediately prior to LEL the UGS had
gone over 1,000k without a puncture, but had had several punctures
before that. The front tyre, also a UGS, has had a few punctures too.
I'm fed up with them and shan't be buying any more.

However, talking to other AUK's I found 2 reactions. People either say,
"Marvellous tyre, never get a puncture," or they say, "Nothing but
trouble, absolute rubbish, puncture far more easily than Conti GP 3000."
How do you account for that? Spooky, eh?

I actually used a Stelvio on the rear wheel of the Galaxy earlier this
year. It punctured occasionally before it was worn out but nothing like
as many times as any UGS I've used.

I pump mine up to 110 psi. Of course, after the first puncture the tyre
was hand pumped to probably around 90 - 100 psi.

I suspect there's something about the composition of a UGS that makes it
basically very tough, but once it has been damaged it somehow begins to
work on the tube. I noticed that a couple of my tubes appeared to be
abraded in many spots though they hadn't actually punctured there. The
inside of the tyre feels smooth but when you stretch and flex it you can
see that there are a number of perforations. These holes go right
through the tyre, have no foreign bodies in them, and normally appear
closed up. I suspect that in motion the holes flex and nibble at the tube.

The tyre that gave me problems on the Wiltshire White Horses earlier
this year when I punctured once on the way to the start and 3 times on
the 200k event was also a UGS.
