Well after starting to ride in April on a hybird then to a roadbike in May I set a goal of riding a century tour and I did it on Sunday. Was an amazing ride with great weather not too hot only 25c with light to gusting winds. Lots of water stations with food. Did the ride half by myself half with some other guys I just hooked up with. I knew I wasn't going to keep up with them the whole ride but hung on as best I could and yes I did my time out front maybe too much if I had did shorter pulls I could have stayed with them the whole ride. I'm so happy I finished this accomplishment. At the end I wiped my face and thought man do I have a lot of road sand on me ended up being salt deposites. Lots of guys had it, is this normal, I drank a ton of water and electrolytes ate well too. O.K. here are the numbers 160km in 5hr 58 minutes for an average speed of 26.8km/h then because I rode to the event on my bike I still had a ways to go to the finish point and on to my house. Ended up doing a total 177km in 6hr40min for an average speed of 26.5km/h. Now for a cold drink and a big pizza.

Sodium content of sweat varies with heat acclimatization, diet, and such. A typical value is about a gram per liter of sweat. That is roughly a half a teaspoon of salt. Moderate sweat rates are a liter per hour, so you can easily have several teaspoons of salt deposited on your skin. The electrolyte content of typical sports drinks don't even come close to replacing what you lose.
