Hello everyone! Im a 20yr living in SoCal San Gabriel valley area. I’m looking in purchasing a road bike. I don’t have much cycling experience but open to learning. I want a road bike for cycling but also for the use of having a nice bike to cruise my surrounding cities. I am not sure if certain bikes are made for sport and fun, but if I have to only purchase a sports bike I would do that. Can anyone recommend any stores, brands, or models for me? I do not want to exceed a 700$ limit. I don’t really want to have a starter bike either, rather just jump into it and learn off a quality bike. If it cost more though I guess that’s ok too, but don’t need the most expensive model with every single little perk 😉 Thanks for any help guys!

FWIW. If I were starting out & had a limited budget, then I would get a base model JAMIS CODA which has a steel frame (MSRP is-or-was ~$550, so currently should probably be closer to $400+) ...
I would size the frame by the TOP TUBE as if it were a ROAD BIKE, so you may end up with a smaller frame than you might otherwise think because Flat Bar bikes have slightly longer top tubes for a given frame size ...
With the future plan being to fit a set of Drop handlebars + CAMPAGNOLO shifters + appropriate brake calipers (either cantilever or mini-V-brake).
