Hello. I am new here and looking for advice on what class of bike will meet my needs. I would like to start commuting to work and interested in finding a group to ride with occasionally. The way to work is roads (paved and dirt), single trac, and conditions get pretty wet and sloppy during the winter. Cyclocross racing is intriguing, but I'm not sure I would ever be competitive. I can pull together at most about $400 to start and would like something I can build on and improve. Thanks for you suggestions and insight!

Find out what the people you want to ride with are riding. Then see if it's compatible with route you intend to commute on. If they are compatible, excellent. If not, you must make a choice between the riding buddies and route to work.
Then find one for $400.

search your craigslist you can get deals on bikes there, but you have to know what you're looking for so research on the bike/components you want is crucial
