FT on winter wild camping in the ELD
I dont spose many of you take the FT, but if anyone does i'd like
an opinion on thier article about winter wild camping (yes, it is
the FT, more used to promoting luxury yatchs and improbably
priced watches).
It starts (page W19) with a large picture of Wasdale from the
Gable Traverse, in summer. OK, the writer may have had no input
there.
The writer has decided to do a wild camp on the ridge of Scafell
Pike between Broad Crag and Great End in early Feb. He recruits a
freind, an ELD winter regular. They plan a 19 mile walk, but
commute it to 14 1/2 and end up doing 11. They appear to have
booked a weekend in advance so it wasnt a watch the weather map
and go trip, but get a cloudsea and a sunset above the clouds [1]
on night 1. dinner is cuulen skink followed by beef stew and mash
"cooked earlier", (they were in a hotel the night before [2],
washed down with a bottle of claret. The next day they go up to
SP summit where they can see Ireland, then onto Langdale via
Langdale Pikes
1] Langdale is certainly a place you get a lot of inversions,
unlike Wasdale.
[2], The Queens Head, Troutbeck, dinner sounded good, which I
would believe as I know the chef who went there from Wasdale is
good!
I dunno, it just doesnt read right, no mention of the long night
in the tent. I reckon maybe they did it but embroidered how nice
it was and made it sound unreal in the process? If they carried a
bottle of claret (having dumped a Wainwright as "too heavy"😉 they
must be fit or nuts.
