  1. Hi

I have been training to do a bike ride over the last few months, before February I hadn't been on a bike for more than 14 years, I was over weight and unfit. I decided to take on a personal challenge and cycle from London to Lands End. It was with a friend but he has broken his ankle playing football 🙁 so I am now cycling on my own. The route I am taking is 439 miles and I have been training over the last 3 months to do this.

There are a few questions I have that I'm sure some of you pros can help me with and I would REALLY like to hear your input with regards to suggestions, tips, advice etc

1, I have been using gel carb packs for extra energy when on long rides, I hear I should eat lots of protein after a days cycling, I also saw in the bike shop some low carb, high protein shakes. Would you recommend these shakes for post rides?

2, I am considering trying clip pedals, my current shoes allow both normal pedals or clips. Do clipped pedals have their benefit?

More questions to come as and when.

I will be doing this ride for charity called CLIC (www.clic.org.uk) which helps babies and children with cancer. I do have a website if anyone fancies taking a look. www.justgiving.com/stevenhorsley

Please please please put done any comments you think will help me when riding.

    Many Thanks
    Steve (vbs)

  2. Oh just one more thing, I've started using a HR strap/watch and wondered if the following rates were typical.

    Resting Rate : 70-75
    Average Rate while cycling :138-142
Rate when going up hills : 160-165
Rate for the next 2 hours after I finish cycling : 90-94

Could someone tell me if this seems ok or am I over doing it.

    Thanks
