Ferrules?

Yes you should - the plastic over the housing will peel back off the metal
helices, especially the shifter housing. Your shifting will be messed up.
It will then squeeze through the cable stop and splay out, stabbing you in
the legs repeatedly, and you will quickly die of blood loss.*

Yes, they're pretty important.

mileage may vary, especially if you're smarter than me and notice the blood
trail you're leaving and the ensuing light-headedness.

yes for der housing as the little wires will travel outside the casing and
screw up your shifting.

Just to play devil's advocate... :-)

Although *I* would never build my bikes without the ferrules, my (much)
older brother insists that he likes his brakes *without* ferrules on the
cable housing. He claims (and I *highly* doubt this) that they "feel"
better without them. (He's been riding for about 30 years now.) I
certainly can't "feel" any difference between his bikes and mine.

Just wanted to give you another opinion.

I agree with the other posters so far; put 'em on.
