  1. I was at my parents place last night and my little brother was questioning me on his new excersise bike he has just done damage to his knee and under advice from his ortho needs the bike to build up the muscle again as it is quite weak. Now my sister is a first year med student and a right royal pain in the ass at the moment as she apparently knows everything about everything and is not afraid to tell you. I was explaining to my brother that he should be using a low resistant workout at a higher cadence and slowely build up to more resistance. Well my little sister broke out with all sorts of phisics equations on why he should be pushing the harder resistance and went on and on resieting her med schooling and why i had no idea what i was talking about. I ended up giving in and got sick of arguing with her, now i could be wrong but is there anyone out there with more knowedge than my sister that could give me the right answer.

  2. I have no medical background, however when I injured my knee a few years back, the physical trainer had me do warm-up on a stationary cycle at low resistance and high cadence. Afterward I would do the strength training all through weights. Started out with the first set of 12 - 15 reps of a given weight and did 2 more sets increasing the weight slightly each set.

I wore a brace for 8 weeks straight and since then, even though my knee is not the 100% it once was, I very seldom have discomfort.

    Best Regards,
    Ryan

  3. Your brother's orthopedic surgeon - or his rehab folks - are the best resource here. Rehab techniques depend on the nature and extent of the injury and the repairs (if any) that were done. Each case is different, there's no "one size fits all" here. A phone call to the ortho should be able to get him a detailed description of the types of exercises recommended, the intensity and duration needed, and a scale of progression.

I certainly wouldn't recommend listening to your sister on this one. And I wouldn't let her get anywhere near you with a knife in her hand either<grin>.

  4. Autoboy:

Just think of how smart your sister will be in 3 more years. Get used to it anytime someone in your family gets a cut or scrape!!!

That aside, how did your brother hurt his knee in the first place???

The problem with advice from most doctors is that they know very little about cycling other than bicycles have pedals and two wheels. Most if not all doctors prescribe "cookbook" therapy that does't change much if at all between patients.

Knee surgery/damage takes time to heal, which often results in muscular atrophy. The muscles, tendons, and ligaments become weak. Weights are the best way to regain crude muscle strength and improve the health of the knee capsule in general.

Again, it really depends on what got his knee hurt in the first place. A rider who has acute tendonitis from pushing too hard is well advised to spin lightly. However, damage that requires surgery and the resultant atrophy that follows is probably best dealt with by weight training.

    Good luck!!!
