    Dear Mr Mason,

I am concerned to learn of the apparent hi-jacking of your name for a
letter-writing campaign. We received a hand-written letter in your name and
had no reason to doubt its authenticity.

Perhaps you could telephone me to see if there is something further that
can be done? Call free phone 0800 010111.

    Regards

    John Wellington, Mail on Sunday.

  2. Let's hope something positive comes from it.

At least there is a physical letter involved, I will ask them to send me fax
    of it if that's allowed.

I think also you should ask them to publish a brief letter from you
explaining that your identity had been hijacked and that the views
published were emphatically not yours. Which is sort of equivalent to
them publishing a retraction but involves less loss of face on their
    part.
