  1. facts:

    DA RD-7402 RD
    DA 8SP bar end shifters
    FH-M550 7SP freehub

    knowns:

the RD-7402 can be used with 'alterative' cable mounting to behave
more in line with other Shimano RDs

the DA 8SP bar ends have the same cable pull as all 9SP Shimano
    shifters/brifters

the FH-M550 will accept an '8 of 9' cassette scheme

    unknowns:

Will the RD-7402 shift an '8 of 9' cassette on the FH-M550 freehub
    using the 'alternative' cable routing?

    Any and all help appreciated!

I think you're mistaken. The alternative cable position is used to increase
derailleur travel per click - to make a newer (7700) derailleur behave like
    a 7402, for example.

    Right.

    Right.

No (see above), but just about any other Shimano derailleur with standard
    cable routing will.
