- I'm wondering what kind of "damage" can occur to cycling clothing when washing with non-chlorine bleach and fabric softener.
- And, is it reversible? Once her part of the wash load was done, I put my stuff back in just for another round of the double rinse cycle, hoping that it would rinse out any enemy chemicals.

From what I heard, it will lose its wicking properties. And dont forget to wash it cold. 🙂
I can't speak to the potential damage done, or how to reverse it, but it might be good to morph the thread a bit toward cycling clothing care, generally.
For me, it goes into the second side of the sink after riding. A bit of cold water and dishwashing liquid is all I use. It soaks overnight. I rinse it, then roll it in a towel and step on it to dry it. The final drying comes from hanging it up for the rest of the day.
My stuff stays clean. The wear rate seems quite good. I don't bother with the washing machines for bike clothes.
Good luck with your recovery. I can't imagine too much harm was done.
I take bib and jersey into the shower with me before the sweat dries and rinse them out, squeeze of the water gently, and hang them up. No soap. They never smell bad and last a long time. Similar situation once, a GF washed and dried! a bib and they were totally hosed -- elastic on legs was dry and cracked, fabric less resilient.
Well this is all news to me. I just chuck my cycling gear in the wash with everything else and have done so for years with no apparant ill affects at all.
