When I bought my Garmin Geko 201 GPS, I also bought the Garmin serial port + cigarette lighter plug lead.
I had been wondering how to power the gps externally while uploading routes etc, until I found out that you can buy AC to DC adaptors with a cigarette lighter socket built in!
So I bought one of these:

It works pretty well! Cheaper than buying a usb powered cable for the gps.
