I am always amused how wrapped up people get with beating who is on top. They could be a nicer personalitity, have many loyal and true friends, do good things for many people behind the scenes, etc... For no reason other than change, people will get bored and cheer for the extreme underdog. They might not know a damn thing about their hopeful choice. This individual could be mean, not care about their mom, have made poor choices in their life, and be hopelessly undertalented, but if they were third last year, the become some peoples own personal hero.
