Exercise, not alcohol, helps fight cold

Drinks in cold! No, not at all. Rather one should prefer
exercise. Doctors say that a drink or two may give one
initial click, but it doesn't help much in medication.
Rather it greatly eats into one's purse.
"One should avoid drinking even if the weather is
extremely cold. To alleviate the cold, one should go for
rigorous exercise and it will keep him fit throughout the
day," Dr Vijay Kohli, a senior consultant at Escorts
Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC).
"Drinks increase high density lipoprotein level in the
body. It is coronary vasodilator, but won't help for a
long period of time. It may give one initial relief, but
may cause more harms," Dr Vinay Agarwal, medical
director, Pushpanjali Medical Centre, said.
"It is only myth that the drinks help one in alleviating
the cold. As a result, the people throng the liquor
outlets and spend hard earned money on drinks. The sad
part is that even the educated lot opt for more drinks
and spend a lot on it," Dr Agarwal added.
"A few precautionary measures like wearing warm clothes
and taking a balanced diet will help one to beat the
cold. Women and children upto 5 years of age should also
exercise in the house. This will ensure there is no
vasoconstriction," Dr Agarwal added.
"Almost every day I get over 10 queries from my friends
about the role of alcohol in alleviating cold. Even the
teetotallers ask if they could have one or two pegs to
fight the cold. It's a very strange situation," Dr
Agarwal added.
Heart patients with hard muscles damaged should not touch
alcohol at all. "It could be dangerous for them. Only
those whose hard muscle is not damaged and take drinks
regularly can take 60 ml per day. They should, however,
consult their doctors first and follow their suggestions
strictly," Dr Harshvardhan, senior cardiologist, Ram
Manohar Lohia Hospital, said.
"People, who don't drink at all, should keep away from
alcohol. Alcohol doesn't have any definite medication
value. It certainly gives instant calories, as it is the
first love of the body," Prof A K Jain of University
College of Medical Sciences said.
Replying to a question, Prof Jain said: "In a city like
Delhi, people always have leaning for drinks. This i
considered to be a part of metropolitan life. At the same
time, little initiatives are made to educate the people
if the consumption of alcohol help to beat the cold."
"In summer, people feel like consuming cold beer. They
think that it gives some relief from the scorching heat.
The fact, however, is otherwise," Prof Jain added.
