I know how boring stationary bikes are, and I would much prefer to be out on my Klein, but during the week it is often dark out when I get home from work. I need to do something to not backslide between weekends.
I initially looked at a rear wheel trainer, but don't like the unnatural stress they put on a very expensive frame, and am now looking for advice on a decent stationary bike.
Upright or recumbent?
Seemingly great prices on the Keys CardioMax 560U but I have never seen one in person and only have seen the brand on the internet.
What about a rear wheel trainer and a cheap (second hand?) bike to put on it?
I looked at stationary bikes and spinner bikes in May. I personally didn't like any of the inexpensive stationary bikes at all... hideously uncomfortable seats (although I might have a funny-shaped bum, based on my current/ongoing saddle-hunting), many were difficult to pedal quickly on, and I just generally didn't like the feel of them. There was one wind resistance model that felt very nice, but it was much more expensive than the second hand bike + mag trainer I ended up with. And all of the spinner bikes were more expensive (most felt fairly similar; the models manufactured by Pulse were far and away the best and I nearly bought one anyway, but they're also comparatively expensive compared to others). Many of the bikes of both types seemed to be just "badge-engineered" too.
I've only tried recumbents in the gymnasium at the apartments where I used to live. I prefer upright, but my father prefers recumbent (which isn't much help, I know).
How about trying a bunch of different bikes out at a sporting goods store, if you have any nearby?
