I'm hurting bad. My 16gb PQI USB stick failed during a 1 gb transfer of a big folder. Then when I moved from Houston to Chicago I lost another 16 GB Sandisk Cruzer stick [as well as my $1000 JVC HD Camcorder].
Now, some really bad stuff happened again. My external Antec Drive with the infamous Seagate 1.5 TB drive just conked out - gotta send it to a Data Recovery firm or maybe will Seagate send my Data to me?
I'm fed up with losing data! I'm finally gonna get a RAID 5 system going with a QNAP TS-509 Pro and 4 Samsung Spinpoint 1TB drives!

How was your experience losing and recovering data and paying to get it back?
I ran a software RAID 5 system years ago, under NT 3.5, and trashed one SCSI drive when one of the infamous removable cartridge drives crashed. Shouldn't happen, but a 4 GB drive that was part of the array became unreadable, and reported itself to the controller as 128 mg. I was never able to salvage that drive. Fortunately the other drives survived, but this is such an unwieldy system to set up and run, that I have since come to rely on regular (and I do mean regular) backups to an external SATI drive in a USB housing. The most important backups are then copied to a removable IDE drive and stored off site. My restore software is on a bootable CD. I clone my internal hard drive to a removable drive every month, so by simple BIOS setting change, I can keep running until I can restore my sytem. Yes, I do sometimes wear a belt and suspenders, and most of my bikes do have "dork disks".😉

Sell your 4 best bikes - that'll pay for the data recovery. Seagate will laugh at you if you ask them to do it for free.
Never keep your only copy of important data in one place. If you must, use a utility to make a copy of your important stuff to one folder on your harddrive and then periodically burn that folder to CD or DVD depending on the size.
