essential kit

  1. I have just started triathlon training and am quickly realising that this
    could turn out to be a very expensive hobby! Can anyone tell me what sort
    of kit is absolutely essential and how much I should be looking to spend (I
    live in the UK)

    At the moment I am doing my cycling on a common or garden mountain bike and
    I have looked at bikes on the triuk website and frankly I can't tell the
    difference between the £500 ones and the £5000 ones. Any tips on what I
    should look out for?

    And finally can anyone reccomend a decent training guide? I am looking to
    start with short distances but, naturally, have the prospect of an Ironman
    as an eventual goal. Until very recently I have only been a runner but
    would now like to expand

    Hazell,

    If the mountain bike works OK, put some slick tires on it and use it for
    your first race. Then, once you catch the bug start spending the money!
