  1. I am very new to road cycling, and have been doing some research on bikes and equipment. I have found a LBS I really like and the people there are really helpful, and I am sure they are getting sick of me stopping in and talking everyday about stuff.

Anyway, I have ordered a 2011 Jamis Ventura Comp that should be in next week, (according to the LBS, it was a good fit for me in my price range, and my test rides felt nice) and I am now wondering about Pedals and Cleats. Is there any advantage over one type to another? Is there anything i should keep in mind while looking at them? I am looking to ride for fitness, and I live in Florida, so it's pretty flat around here. I know it's kind of an open ended question, but I am just confusing myself trying to look online at stuff.

On another note, is there anything else i should be looking at buying as far as "starter" equipment that anyone would consider invaluable to a starting road rider? Computer? Tools? Etc?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  2. Seeing as you are new and are already purchasing a bike from your LBS you should have them set you up with a decent entry level pedal and shoe. Everyone has a favorite brand they like so if you stick with a name brand carried locally you should be OK.

You need a good floor pump to keep your tires properly inflated. Get a saddle bag and keep a spare tube, tire levers, patch kit, identification, and a multitool. You will need either a minipump or CO2 inflator the choice is yours but I recommend that if you go with the CO2 inflator that you carry at least two cartridges so you can fix two flats. Always carry a little cash and Cell phone.

Bike computers are optional and are nice to have. Only invest in one once you have everything above covered.

Welcome to the Forum and enjoy your new bike.
    Dave
