On eating some toast this morning it tasted mouldy. I checked the bread and indeed it had started to get those little green spots. Normally I check before preparing toast or sandwiches, but as I bought the loaf from a major retailer only yesterday, I didn't bother. (A complaint is now in progress.) But I read somewhere that mould on bread can be the cause of some quite nasty illnesses. What are they?

Hope you are fine.
No doubt whatever you might have caught is apparent now, did you feel any ill effects? Most ppl eat some mold often without knowing it and even if they realize it not much happens (IMO, no expert)
Ergot is a mold or something like that and causes severe illness but it develops in the grain.

No. I spat it out, although I had already swallowed some. I have written both to Tesco and to the local Trading Standards officer. This bread was barely a day old.

Ergot dont make you sick, it makes you hallucinate. Ergot is the raw form of LSD. Now, dont everyone start eating mold. The raw form causes vomiting.
Well, yeah, and ergot also can cause restriction of blood flow, resulting in gangrene of the extremeties, and even death. But ergot is caused from a type of mold that forms on the grain itself, before being made into bread. I don't think that bread mold itself produces lysergic amides et al.
