East Bay to Davis

Warning! My EBBC map shows it being possible to go along
Waterfront Rd., along the RR, to Port Chicago and Willow
Pass Rd. THIS ROAD DOES NOT GO THROUGH. There is a guarded,
gate just over the Hastings Slough Bridge at the refinery
entrance and don't even thing you can pesuade the armed
guard to let you pass!

It is not clear from the post, below, if this is what you
intend (I suspect you mean Maarina Rd. rather than Main St.
out of Martinez), but it will be necessary to go south (I
think on Solano, but check, as we made our way south on
closed gravel roads by climbing a fence after being turned
back at the gate.)

past posts, our EBBC maps and our Krebs maps we have come up
with the basic route and any opinions or comments would be

EBBC maps) to head out Waterfront Rd. to Main St. then Port
Chicago Hwy to Willow Pass (maybe via Kevin Dr.). Then to
Parkside or continue the jog on Willow Pass to 10th to
Pittsburg Antioch Hwy (the route is green but the name
suggests terror). Finally hitting 10th in Antioch and then
taking Wilbur Avenue to the bridge.

Based on these two descriptions we are preparing ourselves
for sheer terror. As long as there are no indications of
toxic contamination we are doing it.

We have no maps for any of this so we are relying again on
[email hidden] who states:

"At the far end of the bridge you will be really tired of
being that close to traffic moving that fast. Continue on.
At this point you are on Highway 84 and going almost
exactly north."

"It is about 10 miles to Rio Vista Rd. (Highway 12) and
most traffic will turn right and head to Stockton via this
'shortcut'. Continue straight and you will find Isleton in
about another 5 miles. Just as you drop off of the levy
into town there is a deli on the right, it's back facing
the highway. You can get something cold to drink and a
sandwich there."

Then following the Krebs "Lake Tahoe and Gold Country" map
we can follow from Isleton to Andrus Island and then follow
Sacramento River to CA 160 to get to Sacramento. Then

Could someone explain this in more detail? I dont see I-80
on the map so Im not sure where to start looking for the
bike path.

Port Chicago Highway along the river from North Concord to
Bay Point was closed by the Navy about 10 or more years ago,
so you can't get through. The East Bay Regional Park
District built a bike path on the N side of Hwy. 4 from
Willow Pass Rd. in Concord to Willow Pass Rd. in Bay Point.
Essentially, it parallels Evora Rd., which is just to the N
of the bike trail. You could take Evora Rd. too, but I think
it would be harder as it has more ups and downs in it. You
may actually have to ride along the shoulder of Hwy. 4 to
get from Port Chicago Hwy. to Willow Pass Rd. in Concord, a
distance of probably about a mile.

Another way you might consider is taking the CalTrans bike
shuttle from the Martinez waterfront across the Benicia
Bridge and the frontage road along I-680. From there you
would head NE to Davis somehow - but I would NOT take Hwy.
12 (no shoulder for a goodly portion of the road and heavy
truck traffic). Looking at the map, you could take Suisun
Valley Rd., make your way over to Pleasants Valley Rd.,
Putah Creek Rd. and cut over to Davis. I don't know if this
way is farther or not, but probably is shorter if you are
going to back track from West Sacto the other way. It would
also be a lot more scenic too.

You might also look at the discussion on the Grizzly Peak
Cyclists email list on Topica
(lists.topica.comgrizzlypeakOpen ↗) around the
3/16/04 time frame and look for "Antioch Bridge to Davis."
One recommendation was "I recently road Hwy 84 from Rio
Vista to Jefferson Street in West Sacramento and found
it to be perfectly rideable. Very light traffic."
