Early Christmas!

Christmas came early for us since Kimberly is working an early shift at
the hospital tomorrow so we opened presents tonight. I had a big list
to make it easy for Kimberly to pick some bike stuff up for me but the
only thing I really wanted were some cool socks since when I buy them
myself I just get $4 generic white Coolmax's. And of course being as in
tune with me as she is I got just that, one pair of Che socks and
another with flames, both pairs rock. On top of that she got me a WTB
Pure saddle and some Pearl Izumi shorts, so my ass is going to be very
grateful to her, and on the non-cycling front I got some snowshoes and a
lens hood for my Canon 10-22mm lens.

I'll be testing out those shorts, socks, and saddle tomorrow but I won't
be testing out the snowshoes until Mammoth on 1/7 since it's 85 degrees
here.

Happy Winter Solstice!!!

Warm and raining here so don't feel bad about not riding.

Santa delivered my bonehead camera enclosure but the camera went back to
Sony for repairs (A/V port doesn't work - don't buy stuff from Fry's).
Then Santa surprised me with a JVC hard drive camcorder (not from
Fry's). Now I'm figuring out how to mount it to the top of my helmet
(it only weighs 13 oz). No bike stuff, though (I consider the camera
bike stuff for me anyway).

Wife got a new Razr cell phone (makes my Blackberry look like a brick).
Kids got lots of cool stuff like a laser tag game, FRS wrist watch
communicators, books, video games, and a down comforter for each (I keep
the house at 65F - I can't sleep any other way).

No astro stuff? Susie got me some constellation recognition flash
cards. I got Christmas early with the C11. :)
No bike stuff this year, I guess I blew that by replacing my ancient
workstand myself in October.
The kids did well without being obscenely overindulged (by US standards).

OCC mug should have a picture of Paul Sr. that turns red when you pour
in something hot.

Those snowshoes will be fun..

Family YMCA membership here, along with some tools, trinkets, and bike
stuff... SRAM, SRAM and more SRAM... and the promise of a new crankset
if I can settle on which one...

Glad to hear it was good. I never know how roasts will turn out which is
one of the charms of home roasting.
I sent GT a link to a North Hollywood roaster. If you or he get a chance
you should stop by and get some of their fresh roasted. According to
alt.coffee experts it's one of the best in the country for roasting coffee.

Now stop reading and go ride for me.......

I'm definitely going to stop by since it's close to work. And even
though I didn't get anything coffee-related for Christmas my birthday is
in a couple of weeks. Failing that, I'll use birthday cash to pick up a
burr grinder and a vacuum brewer.

Those guys are a bunch of flakes. We went to go pay them a visit when we
were in the area and we got advised by the locals that they are rude and
obnoxious people. So we decided to skip out.

They've gotten way more attention than they deserve. For some reason
Jay Leno likes to encourage them so they're at work every other week
with something new for him to check out.

Let us know how that works out. I love the idea of that HD camera, but
read that maybe that JVC wasn't a great implementation. I'm holding out
(with my big Digital8 that I rarely use because it's bulky) for the next
solid state big thing in video cameras.

I've got a Razr on the way. I had to switch back to Cingular from
Verizon (with a v710) because there's no Verizon service on Monarch pass
where I ski frequently. That meant I shouldn't ski when on call and
that's not acceptable!

65 sounds warm to me. I used to have it set to 60 for night, but the
wife made me bump it to 62, which is OK.

You couldn't tell from the TV show? The first time I saw those guys I
immediately knew there were not my kind of people! (and I'm sure I'm not
theirs either)

I am doing a test ride with it on Sunday. I did some family filming
over the weekend and I have to say it is the most convenient camera I
have ever used. The software it comes with is pretty simple too. I did
about 20 minutes of shooting. You can then hook it into the computer
and it will recognize the device as an external hard drive. You can
just copy the movie from the directory to your computer it's ready to
go. If you don't do it that way, you launch the software and edit it
right from the camera's hard drive. It's all drag and drop and you can
add the usual set of effects, image enhancement, titles, etc. Then you
click produce and you can choose a streaming file (for the web), CD or
DVD, and some other video options too. It burns the CD or DVD right
from the software (no separate program).

I usually use Adobe Premiere, but I have to say the included software
did a great job and a lot faster than I could have done with Adobe. My
Father thought it was cool because ten minutes after filming, I handed
him a DVD of the whole event.

Oh, and it takes 2MP photos with a built in flash. Good for a quick
shot without having to switch to another camera.

My complaints are:

1. No viewfinder. All the filming is done through the LCD and the
camera doesn't stay on unless the LCD is open. That chews up battery
very quickly. I think I read about a hack for this, so I'll have to
search around.

2. No A/V inputs. But then again, I think Sony is the last hold out here.

3. It can get warm. It's a hard drive, so it spins. Just like a
regular iPod gets warm, so does this.

4. Battery life sucks!!! The battery it came with is practically
useless. I think I clocked in 15 minutes of run time from a full
charge. That's pretty disappointing when you can shoot seven hours of
highest quality video onto the hard drive. I had to buy two more
batteries of varying sizes. The medium size gives you 1:15 minutes and
the King Kong size gives you almost 3:30 (but it weighs as much as the
camera). They're not cheap, either.

When I am away on business, I keep the A/C in the hotel rooms at 60.

On my Christmas list I had V brake pad inserts. They
didn't come so on Tuesday I end up at the LBS and lay down the bucks for
2 pair. At home I laid them on the coffee table. The wife says I got
them didn't you get them for Christmas, no. She looks in her closet and
comes out with a wrapped present. After opening it its brake shoes 2
pair now thats the 12 days of Christmas. Got rid of the Walmart gift
card Silicone lube,Ultimate Glue,White Sands DVD.
