    If you're talking red lights then this is not my experience, but I am
    aware that many people find flashers easier to spot. If (as I believe)
    you're talking front lights, then I couldn't disagree more. YMMV, of
    course, but I actually find a cyclist with a bright flashing white LED
    significantly harder to spot than even an unlit POB. It seems reasonable
    to suppose that I am not unique in this regard.

    I can see three plausible, and not entirely discrete, explanations for this:
    1) With a flashing light there's a chance that it will be in the off
    phase when I look in that direction, even if I check 2 or 3 times. The
    longer the off phase relative to the on phase, the more likely this is.
    I saw one a few weeks ago where the off phase seemed to be about 4 times
    as long as the on phase.

    2) The light flashes on as my gaze sweeps towards the cyclist, and is
    off when my gaze passes over the cyclist. The bright flash as my gaze
    sweeps towards him might blind me to the unlit cyclist as my gaze sweeps
    over him.

    3) A bright white light that appears in peripheral vision and then
    rapidly disappears is likely to register as the reflection of a moving
    car headlight in a window. I will automatically look for where the
    headlight is likely to be, rather than looking at a window that poses no
    threat.

    As well as any of this, there is also the fact that a moving object
    displaying a flashing light is much harder to track than a moving object
    displaying a steady light. It is now legal to use a flashing light
    without running a steady light alongside it, but IMO it is extremely
    foolish to do so.

    Which is why I have 2 lights front and back, one flashing to grab the
    attention and one steady to provide a fix. The fact that the steady ones
    do not have a flashing mode available to them and that the initial mode
    of the flashing ones is to flash tends to help.

    Thanks, that's useful to know. I was worried there was a switch integrated
    into the hub that couldn't be bypassed.

    Since I'm ordering it might also make sense for me to buy a hub dynamo at
    the same time, to be fitted at a later date. Can anyone point me in the
    direction of which models to look at/reviews/etc? I think I have a Shimano
    NX-30 as a benchmark: I'm fairly happy except it's a bit notchy at about
    18mph. I think Shimano have released lots more now - which are best to
    consider? I'm not really in SON territory unless they've significantly come
    down in price.

    Thanks for the suggestions so far - the B&Ms look good, and I'll have a look
    at the others tomorrow.

    I'm not sure what you base your supposition on and I've no idea whether you
    are right or not. When driving (more often than cycling I'm ashamed to say)
    flashers stand out much more brightly to me- but I am nealrly alwyas in well
    lit well trafficked roads.

    I run a steady light as well as the flasher - front and rear(hence the reply
    to the thread). the helmet mounted light is invaluable when putting my bike
    away in my unlit shed and people think I'm even more ridiculous when riding
    the bent - a double added bonus!

    My supposition is that I'm not unique in the way I perceive flashing
    lights. Perception is a very personal thing, and it's well known that
    different people will perceive identical stimuli in different ways. I
    /appear/ to be in the minority in the way that I perceive flashing
    lights, but I don't believe that my brain wiring is so screwed up that
    no-one else's brain will be wired to perceive flashing lights in a
    similar way. I have no evidence for this belief, but it would be

    My perception of flashing lights doesn't work in the same way. For me,
    steady lights are usually very clearly visible, but on a well lit road a
    flashing white LED can not only be almost invisible, but can somehow
    manage to mask the cyclist behind it. If the same LED was used in
    steady mode, it would be almost impossible for me to miss it.

    As a ped, the only time that I have ever stepped out in front of a
    cyclist was when he was using a bright flashing white LED (and no other
    light) under bright street lighting (Milsom Street in Bath at about
    17:00 on a winter evening, FWIW). I looked, but simply didn't see him.
    My belief is that I mistook a brief flash of light for either a
    reflection in a shop window, or a reflection flashing in my glasses as I
    turned my head.

    I imagine that my perception might be different when driving, partly
    because I am constantly on high alert when driving, partly because the
    glasses that I wear for driving have an anti-reflective coating (my
    cycling glasses with prescription inserts don't, and those are the
    glasses I was wearing on that occasion in Bath, and come to think of it
    I'm more likely to be wearing contact lenses than glasses while driving
    anyway), and partly because the surrounding structure of the car makes a
    difference to the light entering peripheral vision. It's impossible to
    say for sure, though. I only drive a few hundred miles a year, mostly
    on the motorway, so I actually have /no/ experience of seeing an
    oncoming cyclist lit only by a flashing light while driving.

    IME nothing says "bike" better than a bright flashing LED, especially from
    the rear. On the way back from the [censored] Warmer on Saturday night, I
    overtook one of our number who was riding back to Kew. He had a small
    steady LED rear light which was almost impossible to pick out among the red
    cat's eyes along the edge of the road (A413 heading south from Chalfont St
    Peter).

    limiting...)

    Interesting... after a bit of looking it seems to be a tossup between the
    DToplight Plus (which I know) and the Toplight Flat Plus (which I don't).
    The DToplight XS is touted as 'extra small', which sounds a bad thing for
    something that's mostly reflector. Does anyone have experience of it? I
    replaced the LED in my DToplight but the viewing angle may well have changed
    with the LED so it's difficult to compare.

    Are there any reviews of lights/more information on the different models?
    B&M and the vendors don't really say much. There's:

    (German or Google translation required)
    but that doesn't cover rear lights.

    Buckpuck (or a number of alternatives, or make your own). Normally
    they are targeted at LEDs, which really want a constant-current
    source, but I suppose you could drive an incandescent with one.

    enough? I have my new XS here (it's waiting for the bike to go onto 🙂 )

    circles on either side of the transparent light bit. The diameter of
    each actual reflecting surface is just over 4 cm. The whole thing counts
    as a certified "Z" type reflector, and this being Germany, I'm sure it's
    all regulated in detail and they are probably comparable to the
    reflector surface of the DToplight.

    to buy, asking whether the Selectra with three diodes is brighter than
    the others. It seems it isn't, they wrote that this is their "entry
    level model" with "more affordable" LEDs and a less well worked (sorry
    dodgy translation alert) circuit board (??), aimed at "first-time
    outfitters" (maybe manufacturers?).

    For what it's worth, they wrote that the "Toplight Flat plus" is the
    latest development they have in the Toplight series, with "new light
    technology" and a new flat design (duh). I didn't to for this for
    aesthetic reasons (I like the slightly weird retro-futuristic plastic
    look of the XS, although I like the looks of the Seculite even better).

    It's the power curves that most interest me: not quite knowing what the
    output of the dynamo is. Someone posted an almost-SPICE model of a dynamo
    on the BikeCurrent list a while back, which might help. I still find the
    mechanical construction the most challenging: my early effort using a glace
    cherries container really didn't cut it 🙂

    Anyway, the ones I'm looking at now are a present for someone else, so
    bodge-it^WDIY probably isn't an option 🙂

    I suppose that's fair enough. I was a bit worried about reflector size,
    given the DToplight has quite a large reflector area which I think is quite
    handy.

    Oddly the RRPs seem to be (from bike24.com, who further discount):

    Toplight Flat Plus EUR14
    DToplight XS Plus EUR26
    DToplight Plus EUR20

    So the 'latest development' is actually cheapest! Is the Toplight Flat Plus
    really LED (for the main light as well as the standlight)? Their other
    ranges seem to be: DSomething - LED, Something - incandescent, and the
    Toplight Plus and Toplight XS are definitely incandescent. The TFP does say
    'diode' on the packaging, but that could be just the standlight.

    Well, in order to qualify as a 'Großflächenrückstrahler' which is marked
    with a 'Z' the reflector has to meet some optical characteristics
    rather than geometrical ones [1] which can also be achieved with a
    smaller than usual surface. bumm do offer some reflectors [2] (without
    tail light) stamped with a 'Z' that are about half of the usual size.
    Might be handy for street legal bikes without fenders and a rack.

    My guess is that they simply wanted to have an additional offer with a
    lower price. Cheap imported lights have become quite popular here on
    entry level and mid-range bicycles.

    Yes, it is with a single LED for both functions. The most obvious

    circuit. While the more expensive ones turn off after a few minutes the
    Toplight Flat Plus slowly dims until the threshold voltage of the LED
    is reached. This is a minor issue but still might attract unwanted
    attention when the bike is parked in public.

    Take care to get the right variant for your rack as the mounting bolts

    The Rear and side visibility are good IMO [3]. Unlike with other
    taillights the LED is visible under the clear cover. This results in a
    very small area of the emitting surface. Some people might find this
    small bright spot annoying as compared to a larger surface of similar
    total light output. For side visibility it uses the clear cover as a
    wave guide. Quite smart and effective also.
    I do not want to comment on the over-voltage protection as this is hard
    to test in a non-destructive way. I want to use the light actually. In
    most cases a generator taillight will not survive running without a
    headlight for an extended time.

    I'm quite sure they do. My perception is that it's definitely brighter
    than the D'Toplight plus. While the setup on the bikes is not really
    comparable, I'd say the odds are stacked in favor of the D'Toplight:

    bike one: D'Toplight, Axa HR traction (new) wired both ways with Schmidt
    cable,
    bike two: Seculite Plus, very old second-hand Soubitez dynamo wired
    one-way only with the flimsy default wire (back via frame).

    I do find the *possibility* to wire a light back via the frame to be an
    asset.

    A short inspection of the bumm website reveals:
    - DToplight: two seperate versions
    - DToplight XS: as you write suitable for 50 mm and 80 mm
    - Toplight Flat: one housing but different mounting hardware and
    two order numbers

    Technology evolves quickly with LEDs. They will have to change the diode
    from time to time in order to match current levels and also supply for
    'old' semiconductor devices will be difficult.

    You could still use a few centimeters of wire to link one of the
    connectors to the mounting bolt. A problem with taillights with ground
    connection and two connectors is that it is very easy to mess the
    wiring up by creating a short circuit.
    I would like to see a version of the new Toplight flat with just one or
    no reflectors and thus narrow enough for mounting it on the seat post
    of road bikes. Even smaller and also less weight than the Seculite.

    Hmm... OK. Annoyingly bumm lights over here are more expensive in pounds
    than they are in Euro - about twice the price. But no-one else seems to do
    decent dynamo lights.

    The Rear and side visibility are good IMO [3]. Unlike with other
    taillights the LED is visible under the clear cover. This results in a
    very small area of the emitting surface. Some people might find this
    small bright spot annoying as compared to a larger surface of similar
    total light output. For side visibility it uses the clear cover as a
    wave guide. Quite smart and effective also.

    Oooh, thanks for all that. Wiring to the frame is presumably possible with a
    short length of wire with a solder tag for the bolt on one end and a crimped
    socket on the other - though IME double wires are better anyway.

    hadn't managed to cope with 460 pages of German on the subject of dynamos!
    The DToplight Plus agrees with my experience - a bit patchy due to the
    plastic diffuser lens inside. The Toplight Flat Plus seems better in that
    respect. I think you've converted me!

    IME a single wire might work for quite some time with a taillight. Front
    lights with their higher currents are much more sensitive to bad
    connections.

    If ever possible it might be worth comparing the two lights. The lens
    might make it more agreeable. Just like car taillights where quite
    often the bulb is not directly visible from the back. A point to
    consider if you are planning to ride not solo but in a group.

    Well, there are always German online shops (maybe Dutch ones as well).
    I've only used www.bike-components.de, who have a wide selection for
    dynamo lights and are dirt cheap, plus a 10 EUR shipping flat rate, but
    unfortunately you have to pay using a bank account. While the account
    can be in one of several countries, I think they don't do UK. They also
    have the thick, sturdy Schmidt coaxial cable.

    I think there was a thread a while back where someone posted a list of
    more online shops, a lot of which take cards. I could be mistaken that I
    saw this on urc though. Two I remember:
