Switched ? How ? I can see how only 8 of the clicks will be used, the spacing will be still 9
speed spacing though. I can't see why 10 speed ones will not work this way but of course with 10
speed spacings

errrr, no they can't. A 7700 9s shifter, using a DA 8s rear der will shift 8s spacing but you cannot
'switch' the amount of distance the rear der travels each click on the lever.

Nope, no shifter from shimano can be 'switched' from one speed to another. XT 7s top mounts used to
have a phantom click that made them usable with 8s but all shimano shifters move a specific amount,
not changable on the lever.
