I've been doing a lot of test riding over the last three weeks. 17 different bikes, so far. Some have had "low" quality shifting components that were very smooth and quick. Some have had "better" shifting components that clunked during shifting and were not smooth, at all. Should I expect that the "low" quality parts will get worse? Maybe I just got lucky with these parts working well? Should I expect that the "better" quality parts will get better? Maybe I just got unlucky with these parts not working well?

I would imagine a large part of the discrepancy you felt, was that some are road test bikes and may have been off the rack, while others were properly adjusted.
