    if the whole world spent at the same very high level, it would still
    only be $45bn per year. Pound is suggesting that the market value of
    performance enhancing drugs is over 7 times the budget of the world's
    national sports governing bodies.

    In England, 6.3% of people report exercising 'every day'***, which
    places an upper limit on the number of competitive sports
    participants. If 5% of the world's population (300 million or so) is
    involved in competitive sport, they're each spending nearly $1000 per
    year on performance enhancing drugs according to Pound

    Probably not, but unfortunately mass media editors are happy to use
    sensationalism wherever they can find it; especially if it comes from
    somebody with a "title."
