  1. I don't want to start the pacing thread again but just had some more
information about a team mates performance.

I asked my teammate who ran 2:45 at the HMRRC Marathon in October about his
HM split, it was 1:24. He ran 1:18:04 at America's Finest 1/2 in August.
That course is far from being flat though, it has a big down hill at the
start and a big uphill at the end. He ran 1:25 there in 03' and his
Marathon PR at the time was 2:50 but was from October of 02'.

His 5k splits at the Stockade-athon 15k on Sunday were 17:32, 17:48 and
17:57. I'm amazed that he ran that even. He ran a 2 minute PR. He's in his
40's and tearing up the roads, I'm living vicariously through him!

That's a very good performance given his half marathon time.

So from the point of view of my analysis, his split/HM difference is 6
minutes -- that puts him alongside me and the more conservative runners in
my sample (I actually ran the first half 8 minutes off my HM time).

I think to run a really fast time, you have to be prepared to go out not much
slower than about 6-7 minutes off your half marathon time -- otherwise you're
not giving yourself a reasonable chance of getting in the ballpark of
    2xHM + 10 min.

Overall, it seems that for someone who's a gifted marathoner, 3 minutes above
half marathon time seems to be about the lower limit (for either half of the
race) and that implies that about 6-7 minutes is the upper limit (note that I
    exceeded this limit -- because I wasn't expecting to post a top-of-the-line
    performance on my first try)

    Cheers,
