    I am bothered that I can learn more about someone selling
    DVD's on eBay than I can about the Doctor performing surgery
    on my wife... so much so that I have thought about starting
    a website for people to share their patient experiences.

    I understand patient experiences are very subjective and may
    not accurately reflect future care. On the other hand, I
    would not wisely dismiss what appears to be a pattern of
    experiences. My goal is not to "slam" anyone but instead to
    identify those physicians that are truly outstanding in the
    eyes of their patients.

    What liability am I exposing myself to and what problems are
    there in doing something like this? Why has no one ever done
    this before?

    I suggest asking your family lawyer, if you have one,
    about potential slander/libel. I think you can get around
    that by posting a disclaimer that: "we aren't responsible
    for the content of the physician reviews, the views are
    solely the opinion of our users, etc." Since it's such a
    worthwhile cause, you might find an attorney who can write
    up a disclaimer to put on your website for low cost, or
    next to nothing. You're right. It's crazy that people can
    research the features/benefits of a General Electric
    toaster on eopinions.com but there's nowhere to get
    unbiased advice about someone who's going to be cutting
    into your body! Also, you state that your goal is to not
    slam anyone but instead point out outstanding doctors. I
    think that if someone received poor doctoring, they have a
    right to say so. After all, the defense against slander is
    telling the truth. As long as you tell the truth as a
    patient, your doctor can't get you for libel, and we have
    freedom of speech. If you need help getting your site up,
    I am pretty proficient when it comes to web mastering,
    esp. using MS FrontPage, but it's pretty easy if you're an
    advanced PC user.
