Do you need to use special stems for carbon steerer tubes?

....Not usually, most stems will be compatible.

I did have a version of a Deda Zero that wasn't supposed to be used with
one, and some reduction sleeves for 1" steerers have nasty sharp edges that
wouldn't be good on carbon.

Best are stems with a "bias cut fork clamp and opposing bolts reduce stress
on carbon steerer", eg. Oval R700 (from Wiggle).
