While I know they make toe clips and nylon straps to go on platform pedals, do they make rigid "stirrup"-style foot retainers? The toe clips I've seen look ineffective, and I would like something I can sink my foot into up to the ball, even when wearing thick "Army" boots.

A rigid retainer would be quite scary, if you start pedalling with one pedal in the wrong position. Big risk for pedal strike. Closest thing I can think of are "power straps" but they're still textile.

Textile straps seem to "hogtie" my foot so I can't pull it out when I want. While I haven't tried toe clips, the ones I've seen look like they hold my feet off the pedal to where my toes will barely catch the platform. They also look like my foot can slip off easily. Toe clips are fairly soft, unless you manage to get it hooked onto something, it'll fold when it hits something instead of disturbing the rider.
If you can't free your foot you're either using some really odd shoes, or doing it wrong.
