    Try reading slowly. The word "cast" modifies "aluminum cantilver
    brake arms." It does _not_ modify handlebars. As I said, almost all

    motorcycles have cast aluminum wheels instead of wire wheels.

    Lester made cast aluminum BMX wheels in the '70s. They were some of
    the most rugged wheels ever fitted to a pedal powered vehicle.

    you're right, but it doesn't make sense for an ordinary bike unless
    there's some special reason. high end bmx for instance is not as weight
    obsessed. the weight penalty for racing bikes precludes them. and the
    price exceeds that of a wire wheel on low end bikes by some margin.
    makes no sense on either count.

    it's also worth noting that among alloy wheels, not all are cast - high
    end racing wheels for cars and motorcycles are forged. expensive too.

    indeed, and i did mention cast wheels up thread.

    there's plenty of reasons to use castings in different applications.
    with the cast wheels you cite, stress is predominantly compressive -
    which is ok. a cast hub however would not be ok since spoke wires would
    give tensile fatigue load.

    other reasons to cast include economics, excess shape complexity and
    heat resistance - cast iron automotive brake disks are an example of all
    three. but there is a weight penalty to give a satisfactory safety
    margin. with cast fork sliders, again, it's complexity and economics.
    and in order to minimize weight /and/ have the greatest possible
    application safety, we ensure we don't make dumb mistakes by needlessly
    giving high tensile fatigue loads where we don't need to - and mount
    calipers in the rear accordingly.

    absolute confirmation would require metallography - the grain structures
    for castings, thixoformings, hot forgings and cold forgings are all very
    different. from external appearances however, last centaur i looked at
    a couple of years ago appeared to be forged like chorus but without the
    same standard of finish. who knows how then make that ultra-torque
    stuff - i haven't checked that in person yet.

    Right. I haven't seen their process but they are at a much lower price
    than cold forged cranks. Flip one over- see?

    'cheap garbage' is simply not accurate. Although it certainly applies to
    gravity/sand castings.

    The Moulton was even more primitive than I thought for much longer!

    it's not wrong - it was standard practice for any shop that doesn't have
    some special exclusive tool. back in the 70's when i had my first bikes
    and was struggling with crappy cottered cranks, many is the time i'd
    watch my lbs install this way. in three separate independent stores
    with separate independent mechanics no less. but i guess there could
    have been a conspiracy to deceive - they probably all called ahead to
    say i was coming so they could do it "wrong" in front of me so i would
    make mistakes in front of some kids on usenet. or i could be a liar.

    Replying to (I think) Jim's latest posting to this thread.
    I worked in the 70's in a LBS that didn't have a special exclusive tool for
    installing cotters. We'd support the far side of the crank arm with a heavy
    block of meta, then use a hammer to drive the cotter in. Then we'd tighten
    the threaded nut to keep the cotter in.

    Most of the BMX wheels I have seen were plastic, not cast metal, and
    were of predictably very poor quality. Are there cast metal BMX wheels?

    jim's point, that the strength to weight ratio of spoked wheels is so
    advanageous that they are still the dominant technology in bicycles, is
    a good one. The few attempts at making a light weight equivalent to a
    "cast" wheel- trispokes, Rev-X, etc.- were not broad market successes
    and in the case of the Rev-X a markedly inferior design that
    disappeared. Those designs are limited to specialty use such as time
    trials and track racing.

    Motorcycles have enough excess power that weight is much less an issue
    than with bicycles.

    I can believe that some putz actually charged a customer for such 'service'

    I'm not usually a snob about shop practice. Many home devised techniques
    end acceptably well (using an allthread to press a headset).

    But turning the nut simply cannot wedge a crank pin acceptably tight.

    'Exclusive' tool? No, just the ubiquitous VAR 07. Do you tighten nuts
    with a pliers and call metric wrenches 'exclusive'?
