what causes disc brakes to squeak,it is very light and annoying.i have several thousand miles on them and the problem seems to come and go at random.thanks for any adivice

About 3 causes are most likely. You may have gotten some contamination on the pads. The calipers may need to be aligned. The disc might not be true. Your local bike shop should be able to tell you which and or correct it.

Contamination is the likely cause. Only water or alcohol should ever touch the pads or rotors. Other contaminants (even a tiny bit of grease or oil such as smears from dirty fingers) can cause pad glazing which results in squealing. When bedding in the pads also need to be treated with a little care (ie: avoid hard stops with new pads).
Take the bike to the shop and explain the problem. They will probably clean the pads and rotors first. Then check that the rotors and calipers are bolted securely to the frame and can't rattle.
