Disc brake pad life

  1. How much life do you get from a set of disc brake pads? I've
    got a road bike with disc brakes, so I know there will be
    few comparables out there, but I'd guess that MTBs used
    mostly on road would be roughly comparable. The brakes are
    Avid mechanicals, so far about 600 miles on them; the pads
    still look thick, but I have had to adjust the brakes for
    some pad wear.

    I get about 2,000 (front) - 3,000 (rear) miles from the
    Aztec caliper brake shoes that I've used on regular
    road bikes.

    Another question - I've only seen Aztec disc pad
    replacements for the Avid pads. Opinions on these? Any
    other options?

  2. Hayes Hydraulics on the road for 35K+ miles. I changed them
    about once per 5k mile year. The changed-out pads went into
    the bike bag 'just in case' and all with visible wear
    remaining.

    It all depends where you're riding.

    I've got an Avid mechanical with 185mm disk on the front of
    my Free-Ck bike (so named because it is a cannondale
    cyclocross frame matched to a carbon lefty freeride fork,
    700c rear, 26" front).

    I used to get 4 - 6 weeks (about 10 - 15 rides) out of a set
    of original Avid pads when riding in Hong Kong. Its quite
    hilly. I would always adjust the pads before a descent as
    the wear was so fast.

    In the UK, I've gotten about 6 months out of a set of pads,
    before I hung this bike up for a while (gone fixed on
    another frame). Those pads are still like new. Its damned
    flat around here!

    I had a lot of trouble with non original pads in the Avids,
    as the copies didn't follow the outline of the original
    pad's material exactly. This makes it impossible to fit the
    retraction spring. This situation may have changed in the
    past year, but I wouldn't know as I've not needed to buy
    replacement pads... :-)
