difference between velocity and weinman

1. I have an opinion about rim qualities, but it might not be 100% accurate. I have experienced 2 rim quality factors.

The easiest to explain is roundness. Rims start as a long extrusion that is formed into a big coil. Then the coil is cut with a saw and the individual sections are flattened and joined to form hoops. I think that the problem is the saw kerf. If they don't fill it in with something there will be a slight flat spot at the joint. The Velocity rims that I've worked with look like they use something to fill the space left by the saw kerf. The Weimann rims that I've worked with don't.

The second is stiffness. Some rims, when I lace them up, feel real "noodley". They're a lot harder to tension and true. On the other hand, certain other rims feel real solid during the tensioning and trueing process. Among the best I have worked with are Mavic Open Pros, Sun Rhyno Lites, and Velocity Dyads.

2. The biggest problem that I've encountered with hubs is the freehub bodies. Problems with Shimano freehub bodies are rare but, if you do have one, it's a simple solution to unbolt the freehub body assembly and bolt on a new one. With many other hub makers you can try to fix the freehub body in place or else you have to relace the rim onto a new hub. Either is a big bother. I love Shimano hubs!

3. I'm not sure what you are asking. Sheldon Brown has a table on his website showing what width tires will fit various rim widths. Aside from that, your bike frame will dictate how wide of a tire you can use.

1. Velocity Deep V is higher quality and stronger. Smoother and rounder and less likely to crack at the spoke holes.
2. Novetech (made by Joytech) has stronger internal parts.
3. The width of the rim determines what width tire you can safely mount. Clearance of the frame/fork/brakes also limit the width. Deep V and DP18 are made for tires to 28 mm width.
