Coca-Cola hopes to cash in on the surging popularity of Splenda by
offering a new version of Diet Coke with the fast-selling artificial
sweetener.
Splenda, the brand name for sucralose, has become a phenomenon in the
United States. Beverage makers are catching on, with Coke being the
latest.
The Atlanta-based company's new product — to be called Diet Coke
Sweetened with Splenda — will be sold in addition to Diet Coke, which
is the top-selling diet soft drink in the country.
"Many consumers told us they liked the taste of Splenda and wanted a
Splenda-sweetened option under the Diet Coke brand, so we're obliging
them," said Dan Dillon Jr., vice president for diet brands for
Coca-Cola North America.
Pepsi is getting into the Splenda fray this year by reformulating
Pepsi One.
Coke said the new version of Diet Coke will be available in the second
