Myself and a friend were caught in a torrent of rain a few weeks ago up near
Achnasheen so unraveled the raincovers.. my Vango bad stayed dry inside the
cover, although my friends Berghaus bag seemed to start taking in water
after a few hours... Our approach is to always have essential / prone items
(mobile phone, first aid equipment) in a foldover drybag.. and use an inner
liner (change of clothes in a seperate bag inside where they wont get wet
from wet gloves accessing the main compartment).

Better safe than sorry being the aim!

I'm not sure about their rucksacks but last year I did the most
miserable walk I've ever done, 30-km around the Avebury area in
Wiltshire in *torrential* rain. The only thing that stayed dry was the
inside of my Deuter Futura 22-litre daysack. The best bit of kit I ever
bought and comfortable too.

To be honest, if I'd known it was going to rain that hard I'd have put a
liner in before setting out, but in the event it wasn't needed.
