The avon gorge has some very nice slabs at about 45 degrees. My father
claims to have ridden a Norton 500 up them and onto the green bit at
the top. Once. Never again. In the 60's.

Not at all, as he said after cycling down the cycle path:

"This stunt took a good deal of planning and Will and I had
double-checked all the equipment to make sure nothing could go wrong. I

Your schizophrenia is showing. One minute the cycle paths are
"safer", the next, cyclists who keep to the roads are afraid to use
them...
