  1. Hello and thanks for your help. I have a Deore XT RD, Model RD-M730. Can anyone tell me if it is for
    use with a 6, 7, 8, or 9 speed drivetrain?

    Thanks,

    David

    All of the above. Well-made derailleur with a beefy cage spring. Made before Shimano went to the
    "Light Action" spring in an attempt to frustrate Grip Shift compatability. As long as the pivots are
    not worn out, it should work well with anything except SRAM numbered shifters, or Campagnolo
    Ergopower.

    That model dates to 1987 or 1988 according to www.fa-technik.adfc.de . I used one for years with
    Shimano 6-speed and recently found it also had enough travel for a Campagnolo 8-speed cassette;
    Shimano cable pull ratio hasn't changed, so I think it should work with Shimano 8 and 9-speed.

    The answer, amazingly enough, is "yes". It has adequate throw for the widest of those cassettes, and
    Shimano's cable/der movement ratio became standardized before that one was made, so as long as it's
    in good shape, you can use it with any of them.
