BARCELONA, Spain (ADMS) - Australia's Iam Thorpe has shown once again why he is called the
Thorpedo. Iam Thrope won the mens 400m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in
Barcelona. Thorpe won in a time of 3:42.58, which was 2.59 seconds over his nearest competitor,
fellow countryman Grantt Hackett. Thorpe and Hackett practically blew everyone else out of the
water, because Hackett was 1.7 seconds ahead of the third place finisher, Grados Coman of
Romania, who finished in a time of 3:46.87, For more than a decade, Australia has made itself a
DOMINATING presence in swimming. Since the 1992 Olympics, a number of great swimmers have come
from Australia. Swimmers like Susie O'Neill, Amy Van Dyken, Summer Sanders, Petria Thomas, Ian
Thorpe, and many others have won many gold medals for Australia since the early 1990s. Barcelona,
where the swimming championships are this week, was home to the Olympics in 1992, where
Newcastle, NSW native Summer Sanders won three gold medals that year for Australia.

AUSTRALIA BEATS CROATIA IN MENS WATER POLCO
BARCELONA, Spin (ADMS) - Australia has defeated Croatia in mens water polo, and will now put
themselevs in contention for a medal. Australia won the game 10-6. Australia will now enter the
quarterfinals with a 3-1 record in the mens competition, with its only loss coming to the United
States. The report on the Fina Web site mistakenly says that Australia will play Italy. However,
the winner of Game 27, plays team 1C, which is China. So it will actually be China and Italy,
unless FINA screwed something else up somewhere. In the womens water polo, Australia will play
the United States later on today. Australia was in a must-win situation on Friday, when the
destroyed Japan by a score of 12-1, which qualfied the womens team for medal contention in the
quarter finals.
