His report of stage 5:
Diappointed! And that is putting it veeeery mildly. Just before the
penultimate climb I broke my wheel. Although I got a wheel quickly from
Jan Boven, I only got contact right before the descent. There were no
cars behind them because a few riders just got dropped. Together with
Joost I came back.. or so I thought, but when we were at the bottom and
turned up the Mont Faron, I saw nothing in front of me for 500 meters!
That first group was about a minute in front already. But I started to
ride anyway and bit by bit I overtook riders. Vinokourov was the last
one I got right before the line. 28th, but how well I climbed. In fact,
that is the only thing I can cling on to. Twelfth on the overall. If I
subtract there what I lost today through bad luck... I don't even want
to know. If... doesn't count. Especially not in elite sports, but I
still do it. For my own morale!
