Last year I related how - travelling east of Guelph - I came upon a
recumbent tandem.
Today the weather as pleasant enough to make that Guelph - Elmira rail
trail run. A rather flat and straight raised rail bed through farmland and
woodland but pleasing none-the-less for that. The mixture of farms fields
and low lying woodland is enjoyable not only to the eye but to the soul as
well. Ahead of me a deer breaks cover to bound across the trail.
The only fly in the ointment was the bridge over the Grand River was
removed causing a bit of a backtrack.
On that detour I went down to travel over the famous West Montrose Covered
Bridge - Naaa I dunno why it's famous but they sure hype it a lot. I think
it is the last traditional covered bridge still in regular use in the
province or some such. I guess in a village that small you take what you can
get in terms of superlatives.
Back on the trail I go past Elmira by a couple km's. The trail continues
on - to Millbank if the name is accurate - but it's still early in the
season and I'm feeling it. I decide to start back where the trail crosses
the road. I take the road into Elmira from the West.
The town has a fair Mennonite community so there is an eclectic mix of
traditional Mennonite farms, a more a generic agricultural burg and typical
suburban sprawl common throughout southern Ontario..
I pass one of those black buggies. I think about challenging the Mennonite
buggy driver to a drag race. I'm much faster. As I pass him the book on MP3
I'm listening to ends and a selection of Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Californication, Give It Away starts playing in my head. The juxtaposition
is amusing.
The kars seem more used to slower moving vehicles thanks to those horse
buggies. I see a few open topped types. Convertibles Mennonite style? I
think of Weird Al Yankovics Dangerous Minds parody.
After toodling around town I get back on the rail trail to head home.

The deja vu? On the way back I see another recumbent tandem - or maybe it
was the same couple. Though the sighting last year was 100 km east on the
other side of Guelph.
All in all a pleasant day.
