I've had the same feeling a number of times from newsgroup discussions. Aside from differences you
raise, there's also the problem of fully describing a situation, or even fully recognizing how it's
different.
For example the city recently installed a middle lane on a four lane street to decrease delays. But
they didn't widen the street. They did this for just a 1 kilometer section. So it subtly changes
from a street with an adequate curb lane to one where cyclists should take the lane--there's not
enough room to share. But you don't really notice the transition. Last weekend a van hit my jacket
because I had forgotten to take the lane.
The street is Keele St between Sheppard & Finch in Toronto. For years Keele has been a major cyclist
thoroughfare for weekend rides out to the country. This section is also two blocks from a
majorToronto university. You'd think the city should post a warning sign "Cyclists, please take the
lane. (Sorry we screwed up the road "improvement."😉
