Hi, Im a 48 yr old recreational cyclist who has been in some races in our town 5 to 10 yrs ago. I have asthma and a bad back but these can be managed pretty well with therapy and medication. I feel I am "slow" on the bike and would like your opinion.
I remember being in a race about 4 or 5 yrs ago and did the 90kms in a wee bit less than 3 hrs, which means i averaged just over 30kph. Is that a decent speed? i was with the pack in the first hour but was dropped later.
what would you consider a decent average speed for a 48yr old in a 1 hour, 2 hour or 3 or more hours road race?
I would like to beat most of the guys my age and keep up with many younger ones 🙂
how about off road? whats a decent ave speed off road on a mtb? (this is harder to compare though)
Average speed really doesn't mean all that much. I have a loop here with quite a few long rolling climbs. My average on that loop is about 25kph. I have another loop (in the same city) that is mostly flat. My average on that can be around 32kph.
But to answer your question, it seems the typical average for collegiate road races in the C catagory is about 37kph. The USCF Cat5 races tend to be a bit slower, probably around 32kph.
What's important isn't your average over that race, but rather if you were able to hang on with everyone else, which it sounds like you did for most of the race.
37kph is about the average speed of the winners in our 3 day 500km road races around our island here. The road races dont have categories, all cyclists of all ages and abilities compete against each other. The mountainbike races here have categories according to age,.. juniors, seniors, veterans, masters.. I started cycling at 35. I prefer the mountainbike races because of the age categories and my off road skills 🙂

I would like to ask on average how long does it takes to do 1 kilometer
Average road race speed completely depends on the type of circuit you are riding. Having said that, find the local groups that train, and you will certainly be riding with some of the local racers... have them tell you where the fast training rides are.
Ride on the fast group rides with the racers and you will soon understand whether you have the condition to start racing again!
