    Tour of Shenandoah Report
This report filed April 25, 2006
    By: Stolen Underground Reporting Staff

The Tour of Shenandoah is underway and DeCanio has had some fun coming back
to the racing scene. This mornings prologue time trial was very eventful
for our Stolen Underground lone warrior Matt DeCanio.

"I started off the time trial good, but after about 500 meters I went off
course. I got confused about the direction the police officer was asking me
to go. I figure I lost a little time."

Matt would finish the time trial a little behind the leaders, actually a lot
behind the leaders. This evening was a 30 lap criterium in downtown
Harrisonburg. DeCanio rode strong for 3/4 of the race following many breaks
and riding in the first 10 positions.

"I haven't raced a criterium in about 3 and half years. So it took a little
bit to remember how to take the best lines. I wasn't really hurting as far
as cardio, but about 6 laps to go I heard a pop in my right tendon and I
couldn't pedal. I have been pretty quiet about my injury that I got Easter
Sunday on my 6 hour training ride. But my tendons have not been able to
handle the workload I have been forcing in preparation for the Tour of
Shenandoah. I am going to try my best to finish this race, but when your
tendons go it is really painful to continue your pedal stroke. This is the
first time in my career I have ever been injured, I guess when you turn 29
you start to fall apart. ha ha! I think the real reason is I have forced my
comeback too soon, I have only been riding seriously for about 30 days."

The upcoming stages are going to be challenging with many high mountain
passes. On another note DeCanio has been welcomed back into the peloton by
    many of the pros racing.

"I have had great support from the local pros, I am happy to say. Some have
even spoken to me about riding for Team Stolen Underground in the future.
They like my team and the style of the underground. I think this is the
start of something great even if I can't finish my first race. The
important thing is that I have comeback to racing and I am getting A LOT of
support from the race, media, and racers."

    Good luck DeCanio!

  4. I hate to say it, but excuses are like a--holes, we all have'em and
they both stink. Decanio's smell worse than others! He has some reason
for everything, but his claim that he's only trained seriously flies in
the face of what he said on his website. Maybe he should have just
said, "Hey, it's been 3 1/2 years since I raced, what did you expect?"
    I'd buy that one.
