Whats the most embarrassing mechanical issue youve ever had to deal with during a crit, and did you manage to MacGyver a fix or did you end up DNFing in front of a crowd of spectators? I mean, lets be real, weve all been there - youre in the middle of a heated sprint, your derailleur decides to take a permanent vacation, and suddenly youre coasting to the side of the road while the pack disappears into the distance.
Im curious to know, whats the most creative solution youve come up with to fix a mechanical issue mid-race, and did it actually work or just make things worse? Was it a jury-rigged fix with some spare parts and a few well-placed prayers, or did you manage to flag down a neutral support vehicle and get a proper repair?
And lets not forget about the etiquette - whats the protocol when youre the one causing the mechanical mayhem? Do you apologize profusely to the riders around you, or do you just shrug it off and blame the bike? Do you get more sympathy from the officials if youre riding a high-end bike with all the latest gadgets, or are they more likely to penalize you if youre on a beater bike held together with duct tape and hope?
Seriously though, how do you guys handle the stress and frustration of dealing with mechanical issues during a crit? Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions to ward off the mechanical gremlins, or is it all just a crapshoot?
