The discovery comes in 19, 21 and 23" - I would say the 21" will be too
small for you, and you should go for a 23".

For the bike in question, I'd maybe go up to 300 at a stretch, but only if I
could see that it was in perfect condition and pick it up in person (zero
feedback seller). 150 is more like it.

Swap the tyres to some slicks and you'll get most of the gain.

However, yes, apart from the size and price, this is a reasonable bike - so
you're looking along the right tracks. Of course if you want faster you
could consider proper tourers or even road bikes...

Some sort of touring bike perhaps? Wide range of gears, road tyres,
mudguards and a rack for panniers.

From memory, this doesn't have a rack or guards, and probably has
rather wide, knobbly, soft tyres.

I'm 6'1" and ride a 25" Galaxy. A 23" was too short.

Have a look at the Edinburgh Bike Co-op range or the Dawes Horizon -
or even a 2003 or 04 Galaxy. You should be able to get something in
your price range.

I'll have a look in the CTC comic and see if there are any useful
links - if that would help.
