My mate Rob has just bought himself a Dahon Jack. This is Largely My
Fault as he came round the other day asking about fairly high end MTBs
for commuting, but wanted to know a good lock so it would not be
nicked from the station. I suggested that a reasonably good MTB for
the weekends and a folder for the station run would probably be a
better use of the cash.
So, he did exactly that. Last night he showed me his new Dahon:

I have to say I am impressed. It is fairly light, rides well (with
the Big Apple tyres he chose) and folds in less than no time. Of
course, it doesn't fold small - but that doesn't actually matter on
any but the most crowded trains. Rob was almost turned away form one
train because there was not time to get to the guard's van, click,
fold, under the arm and voila! The FGW platform woman was really
impressed, not having seen a folding 26" wheel bike before!
Actually it was not entirely my fault, Peter Eland bears some of the
blame as well. I lent him some Velovisions including articles on
folding bikes and the Mike Burrows tyre test.
The only thing is, looking at it, I can't help thinking it would suit
my mixed mode and reasonably frequent 25 miles commute better than the
Brom. But I love the Brom! Clearly I will have to buy both. And you
can imagine how far *that* idea got with The Management, can't you?
