D/A shifting prob

I had the opposite problem occur last weekend - I could shift to the big ring, but to flick back to
the 39 was impossible - both levers would move together. Returned to shop, they have sent to Shimano
Australia for repair/replacement (their discretion). Warranty job! (Apparently one of the nylon
bushes had failed???)

Have you ever adjusted or replaced the cable? It may be as simple as a stretched cable. If you have
no play left in the down tube cable adjuster, you can turn it all the way back down, and loosen the
cable bolt on the der. Make certain the STI lever is clicked all the way down to the 30 and pull the
cable tight. Then, work with the down tube adjuster to see if it will shift easier. This is a good
time to get a new cable as well. John Rees

Flush that bad boy with the 'STI Repair Kit'...WD-40...shift up and down with cable disconnected
while you do...If still no soap, warranty time...Not uncommon for DA and Ultegra, particularly
flitedeck, to fail early on..

shimano, via Wayne S, says they have redesigned the shift guts to be more XTR-esque, to prevent said
problems...

I'll put $5 on the housing being shot. In MANY cases, the STI housing strands (they go the
lengthwise direction of the cable) work their way through the end caps that are intented to contain
them. This isn't too hard when those caps are the plastic ones that come with DA. Now your cable,
which is supposed to shorted against a solid housing to modulate the derr, is pulling against a
commenserately shortening house...therefore no pull on the derr.

I had the same thing happen myself (although on a double). What's probably happening is that your
shifter works fine and is pulling cable, but the housing is essentially shortening with the cable as
it is pulled through the end cap. The easy check is to undo the front cable from the frt derr and
get yourself enough slack to examine the housing. Do this at both the downtube (less common and
easier to see) and in the shifter body (more common and hides really easily). This is definitely
something that you can (and should) be able to do yourself.
